A freeroll tournament is a tourney where there is no entry fee and some sort of cash or satellite game prize. Freeroll tournaments generally see a lot of reckless play at the beginning of the tourney as people have nothing to lose because of the lack of an entry fee. The thought behind this is that if they end up getting lucky within the first few hands, they will be in a good position in the later stages of the tournament since they will have doubled or even tripled up by this point.
This is a horrible strategy. Very seldom do you see early chip leaders go on to win major tournaments, so why would this type of tournament be any different? Just by playing conservatively in the beginning of the game and avoiding these reckless confrontations, you will likely advance to the middle stages of the tournament. This is when you should start playing more aggressively since the overly aggressive fools who did luck out will be starting to guard their chip stacks. By playing aggressively when others tighten their games up you can steal many pots and increase your chip stack at this point. This will put you in a position of control for the latter stages of the tourney while the early chip leaders are starting to realize that they don’t have the skill to keep up with the remaining players at their table.
